INVERCARGILL, NEW ZEALAND — For the third time, we drove the coastal road through the Catlins, this time heading for Nugget Point Lighthouse.
CLIVE, NEW ZEALAND — On the North Island’s sun-splashed Hawkes Bay, Napier is the main attraction.
We’d made vague plans to backtrack from our cottage in Clive, to visit the National Aquarium of New Zealand or go on a historic walking tour of the famous art-deco buildings. But we hadn’t really warmed to Napier, and we weren’t feeling very ambitious.

HO’OKENA BEACH, BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII — I’m not much of a water person, much less a beach person, but this day would turn out to be my favorite beach day, ever.
KONA, HAWAII — Turns out traffic in paradise can be hell. After a breakfast of French toast made with Punalu’u sweet bread, caramelized apples and cinnamon gastrique, we stopped at Costco to pick up supplies.
